Topsham Public Library Children's Garden

The Topsham Public Library is perched on a large sunny site above the Androscoggin River.

In 2007 a group of boy scouts constructed an elegant spiral path from the back door of the children's reading room.

A few years later, the library approached me to design an enticing space for children centered on this spiral walkway. We picked a rainbow garden theme, inspired by Lois Ehlert's book, Planting a Rainbow.

The garden is laid out along the arc of the spiral path, with 4 major color areas: red & pink, orange & yellow, green & white, and blue & purple.  Plants were picked for a diverse range of considerations, including long bloom time, tolerance for a hot, sandy site, attractiveness to birds, bees & butterflies, fragrant leaves or flowers, interesting texture, and playful forms.

The garden was installed in the spring of 2011 and has since hosted many children's activities, adult painting classes, and even a wedding.
